This soundtrack to Sam Peckinpah’s 1973 western of the same name offers a rare glimpse of Dylan the film composer. Though it contains the outlaw ballad “Billy” and one of his most haunting songs, the elegiac “Knockin' on Heaven’s Door,” most of this acoustic-based album is occupied by atmosphere-laden instrumentals. From the gentle, almost stately “Bunkhouse Theme” to the speedy, bluegrass-tinged “Turkey Chase,” you can almost see the Mexican dust kicking up around the boot heels of the movie’s hard-bitten desperados and lawmen.
