Out of View

On its well-realized debut album, The History of Apple Pie recaptures the glorious roar of early-'90s shoegaze sounds with a few twists tossed in. Out of View swooshes and swirls with eddies of guitar feedback, lending heft to honeyed pop melodies that carry trippy, flirtatious lyrics. Stephanie Min’s caressing coo billows through the British quartet’s tunes, beckoning listeners deeper into the maelstrom. Tracks like “Mallory,” “I Want More," and “You’re So Cool” combine teasing sweetness with a sonic wallop reminiscent of Ride and early Jesus and Mary Chain. Guitarist Jerome Watson turns up the crunch on the blistering “Do It Wrong” and taps into a Dick Dale–like surf vibe on the bracing “Tug.” There’s a psychedelic undercurrent present as well, lending a day-glo spaciness to “See You” and escalating to freakout proportions in “Before You Reach the End.” Throughout, The History of Apple Pie never loses its playful air as it stirs up squalls of tuneful noise. If this is shoegazer music, it’s the sort that makes your toes curl with childlike delight.
