Osapa London (Deluxe)

Osapa London (Deluxe)

PsychoYP might be made and honed in Abuja, but Lagos remains a creative port of call for the ever-engaging rapper, whose music definitively explores the intersection of being young, hip, free, and financially secure. On his latest project, Osapa London, YP turns his focus to the high-end enclave of the same name, located in the middle of Lagos’ famous archipelago. Channeling the themes of upward mobility and exuberance that define the pulse of life in Osapa London, PsychoYP continues to be young and uninhibited, making a throwback to the celebratory motifs that drove YPSZN2. Osapa London offers a meditative rumination on the present state of YP’s life and Nigeria on “This Country.” The album also sees the most pronounced infusion of Afropop-adjacent melodies into YP’s work to date. Ajebo Hustlers join for a vibe-led extravaganza on “Not My Fault” and King Perryy adds extra dynamism to “Stand Attention.” Still, PsychoYP never strays too far from his hip-hop origins: ODUMODUBLVCK joins YP for a grime-influenced cut on “Settle Us!” where both proclaim their street credentials, and legendary rapper Ice Prince delivers a breezy verse on “Most Times.” The deluxe edition, released in December 2023, adds three new trap-heavy tracks, including the fiery, Prettyboy D-O-assisted “Do What I Like.”
