On Notes of Longing, Matteo Myderwyk creates an oasis of calm and comfort in music scored for solo piano and synth effects. There’s an almost orchestral depth to many of the tracks, such as in the beautiful “The Young Weaver,” although the music is at its most beguiling when scored for solo piano—the beautiful “Aria” possesses a hymn-like intimacy while the hypnotic “Longing” flows like a river out to sea, its destination reached in its final, breathtaking bars. Notes of Longing ends with “Continuum,” its Bach-esque harmonies moving gently beneath a trance-like, oscillating beat.
