Nellie McKay has long been touted as a potential megastar. She clearly has the talent and the goodwill to pull it off, but it’s been extremely difficult getting her lovable quirks to translate to mass audiences. This eclectic collection of covers allows for several familiar tracks to gain traction while still satisfying her quirky quotient. The Kinks’ “Sunny Afternoon” fits her leisurely gait like a Broadway glove, while Moby Grape’s “Murder in My Heart for the Judge” lets her play with a lesser-known tune by a critically respected group. Her takes on The Beatles’ “If I Fell” and The Small Faces’ “Itchycoo Park” are sublime.
