Originally released as a 10” album in 1955, this is the second release from jazz’s preeminent flutist. Mann would later cycle through Latin jazz, bossa nova, world music, rock, funk, soul and even disco, but this effort features him in quiet bop mode backed by guitarist Benny Weeks, bassist Keith Hodson and drummer Lee Rockey. Tunes range from the playful “Chicken Little” to the spy jazz of “After Work” to the tender balladry of “The Things We Did Last Summer.” And despite the gratuitous and almost comical reverb on “The Purple Grotto,” it was remastered in 2013.
