Music from the North Country - The Jayhawks Rarities

The 2009 Jayhawks Anthology features two 20-song collections. The first collects 20 of the band’s most notable tracks from six of their seven studio albums, while this second collection features rarities from their entire career sure to satisfy longtime fans. Fourteen of the tracks are previously unreleased, several are radio performances. Others are demos, alternate takes (including “Old Woman from Red Clay,” an early version of “Two Angels”) and covers. Fred Neil’s “That’s the Bag I’m In” and J.D Loudermilk’s “Break My Mind” shed light on the band’s folk and country roots, and the band’s originals display the magical harmonies between Gary Louris and Mark Olson and their Americana-style songwriting that virtually invented the genre of alt-country. An intimate Louris-Olson demo of “Mission On 2nd,” a tune left off Hollywood Town Hall, an early version of “Poor Little Fish,” a devilishly weird track from Sound of Lies and demos of “I Can Make It On My Own” and “Rotterdam” highlight this alternate look at a formidable band.
