Music from the North Country - The Jayhawks Anthology (Audio Version)

The ensuing years since the Jayhawks emergence in the late-‘80s-early-‘90s have made their alt-country and honeyed power pop an essential building block for an entire movement that continues to mine old-time country-western and folk with the rock and pop values of the ‘60s and the punk spirit of the ‘80s. Led by Gary Louris and Mark Olson, the Jayhawks featured harmonies and sweet melodic surprises rooted in the past but with an eye towards the future. No mere retro act, over seven studio albums and various line-up changes that saw Olson leave the band, the Jayhawks compiled a stack of impeccable tunes that in another era would’ve been world-class hits. Instead, aside from the occasional breakthrough (“Waiting for the Sun,” “Blue”), most of their accomplishments were left only to their burgeoning cult following. The Anthology is offered in two volumes. The first features a 20-track chronological compilation of their strongest tunes, while the “deluxe” throws together another 20 tracks, including 14 previously unreleased gems.
