Now more than 30 years after forming, with 15 albums to show for the effort, Rebirth Brass Band continue to do what they've always done: mixing old-school second-line fare with modern day funk, rock, soul, and pop. Sometimes the band do this with originals by various members and sometimes in the form of covers. But really, everything always comes out with a sophisticated and soulful groove (thanks to founders Keith Frazier on bass drum and brother Phil on tuba) as well as a never-ending sense of joyfulness. No matter the direction, the horn arrangements are top-notch, adding up to a sound much bigger than a six-piece brass section has any right to, particularly on “Rebirth Makes You Dance.” The party is in full swing with uplifting opener “Lord, Lord, Lord…,” the call and response of “Who’s Rockin’, Who’s Rollin’?,” and the jumping title track. Of course the band can also bring it down, and they do that here for some easy-skanking ska on “On My Way,” with Trombone Shorty joining the fray. As the band themselves say: “Where’s the party at? Right here!”
