Mourn features four young musicians from Catalonia, Spain. Obvious points of inspiration range from PJ Harvey to Patti Smith to Sleater-Kinney, but what makes them more incredible is that three of the four members are just 18 years old on this self-titled debut. Their bassist, Leia Rodriguez, is only 15. In the tradition of powerful punk groups, they recorded the 11 tracks live over two days in the studio, capturing the raw energy that turns songs like “Misery Factory,” “Otitis,” and “Marshall” into credible anthems. Forget their age and focus on the swinging rhythm section (“Squirrel”) and the demanding vocals (“Jack”) for pure transcendence.
