Mosaic (Bonus Track Version)

Mosaic (Bonus Track Version)

There’s never been any doubt about the role Christian faith plays in Ricky Skaggs’ life and music. Still, Mosaic is a powerful spiritual work even by this country/bluegrass veteran’s standards. Skaggs recorded a contemporary batch of tunes (co-written by producer Gordon Kennedy) in a production setting more akin to ‘70s country-pop than the traditional acoustic sounds he usually favors. The album’s lyrics are both Biblical in content and personal in language. Skaggs combines joy with a sense of awe in expansive tunes like “Fire from the Sky” (based upon the Book of Kings) and “My Cup Runneth Over” (a folk-rock piece featuring Peter Frampton on guitar). Symphonic strings and Celtic pipes frame “Instead,” a hymn-like number opened by the voice of 101-year-old gospel legend George Beverly Shea. On the lighter side are bright, uplifting tunes like “Someday Soon” and “I’m Awake Now” (the latter showcasing daughter Molly Skaggs’ lead vocals). Skaggs’ banjo work on “Shepherd’s Voice” adds a familiar touch amidst Mosaic’s adventuresome arrangements.
