Modern Vices

Modern Vices

With a fuzzy twin-guitar attack and scuzzy production, Modern Vices’ debut brings to mind early-'00s indie garage bands like The Strokes, The Hives, and The Libertines. Theatrical lead singer Alex Rebek reinforces the dirty vibe by wailing like a cross between a Jim Morrison impersonator and a demented dive-bar crooner. Though at times he nearly runs off with the songs, the frantic interplay works best on tracks like “Cheap Style,” “(Don’t) Hold Me Down,” and “You’re So Special.” “Smoke Rings” and the closer, “Baby,” change up the formula by crossing skewed doo-wop and surf music, signaling a promising future direction for the band.
