Miss Sick World

Miss Sick World

Toronto’s Alex Porat first found her voice performing homespun covers of big pop songs online, and a look at her repertoire—Billie Eilish, Coldplay, Ariana Grande—provides handy goalposts for the terrain she stakes out on her debut album of originals (which includes the four songs unveiled on last year’s bad at breakups EP). On Miss Sick World, Porat abandons her post as bedroom troubadour and uses her breathy yet radiant voice to reinvent herself as an aspiring club diva, muscling in on the ’80s-disco turf previously occupied by Dua Lipa and Doja Cat on “Dimension” and swiftly redirecting “Taxi” from the campfire to the dance tent. And while Porat hasn’t completely given up on intimate acoustic serenades, she elevates would-be ballads like the title track and “Happy for You” into arena-sized spectacles powered by anthemic, arm-swaying melodies.
