That’s the message that simmers underneath the crisp guitars and soaring choruses of "When I Look Into Your Eyes”—a folksy single from Dru Chen's debut Mirror Work—who sings about how life's only as good as the relationships forged along the way. The rest of the album follows suit thematically. With cameos by members of Fishbone and Parliament-Funkadelic (especially on the bluesy romp “Distant Memory”), this is a coming-of-age adventure with a soul, funk and pop soundtrack, and the songwriter is at his most honest and emotionally affecting.
