Glaswegians Sons and Daughters make guitar-driven indie rock that unfurls on gusts of billowing melodies and fevered storytelling. On Mirror Mirror, they turn down the galloping, cowpunk inclinations of past releases (and the retro girl-group accents of 2008’s This Gift), and go for darker, more sinister tones. Inspired by Italian filmmakers like Dario Argento (a horror and suspense auteur), tracks like “Don’t Look Now” and “The Beach” pulse and buzz with cinematic insinuation, and songs like “Orion” and “Bee Song” coil their hissing snares, clanky percussion and barbed guitars as if preparing for a strike. While Mirror Mirror paints a fantastically evocative mood (in a range of blacks and midnight blues), some may favor the record’s Mekons-meets-the-Yeah-Yeah-Yeahs moments (“Breaking Fun,” “Rose Red,” “Don’t Look Now”); those noisier tunes bristle with grit and muscle, ring with a whiff of twang, and surge with early post-punk furor. Mirror Mirror feels like a small leap for the band, towards a sure-footed and more sophisticated sound.
