Horace Andy’s sly, half-lidded visage and famously unhurried vocal delivery may have earned him the nickname “sleepy” from adoring fans, but the effect of his spine-tingling vocals on listeners leaves them anything but. Though Andy has been among the top rank of Jamaican singers ever since he cut “Skylarking” for Coxsone Dodd in 1969, he didn’t receive international recognition as quickly as some of his peers; he preferred to record for underground producers. This changed for Andy in 1991, when he embarked on a series of collaborations with trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack. In the wake of these collaborations, European producers lined up to work with Andy, including French knob-twiddler Guilleaume Briard—who produced Andy’s synth-laced Mek It Bun in 2002. The album’s dub counterpart, Mek It Dub, appeared several years later. It lets listeners hear one of Horace Andy’s better late-period albums remixed by the master producer Godwin Logie, who's best known for his innovative production work for groups like Third World and Steel Pulse.
