Make Another World (Bonus Tracks Edition)

Make Another World (Bonus Tracks Edition)

On first listen, Edinburgh, Scotland’s Idlewild sound like an impenetrable wall of guitar-pop. But like, say, the Foo Fighters or Bob Mould, once you acclimate to the guitar-buzz ambience, the melodies sneak past and singer Roddy Woomble’s aching voice adds a sharper edge to these well-constructed pop tunes. He’s been compared to R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe for his warbliness, but a less-hysterical Brian Molko of Placebo might be a more apt comparison. “In Competition for the Worst Time,” “Everything (As It Moves)” and the title track come careening out of the gate with emotive humility and grandstanding, anthemic guitar chords. The band’s sound translates to both the free-for-all frolic of small clubs and the heady enormity of the arena without altering a note. However, while the band possesses an obvious confidence and bravado, their best moments are their most vulnerable. The bonus addition of Neil Young’s “Lookin’ for a Love” alongside the moderately paced original “Once In Your Life” showcase this somber side. A much more multi-dimensional band than first impressions might suggest.
