Mahler: Symphony No. 5

Mahler: Symphony No. 5

The Gürzenich-Orchester of Cologne gave the premiere of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony back in 1904, with the composer conducting. Now the orchestra and their general music director since 2015, François-Xavier Roth, give us a 21st-century take on the much-loved symphony. Roth is a champion of both contemporary music and period performance—yet this Mahler no. 5 is delightfully traditional. Despite being laden with emotion, the popular Adagietto unfolds at a leisurely pace, and the outer movements have a real sense of coiled power. Well worth exploring.
