Adding to his catalog of live recordings, Fennesz's Mahler Remix documents a 2011 Vienna performance constructed largely around samples of Mahler's symphonies. With heavy distortion and delay, he uses symphonic material as springboards for his own textural experiments.Ten minutes into the second track, Fennesz introduces a guitar melody that will become "Liminality" on his album Bécs, and the strings dissolve into a spray of fuzzy shoegaze. Befitting its Romantic inspiration, the 64-minute set bobs between moments of beautiful calm and stormy drama, but the closing track is pure, weightless bliss.
