Rhythm is at the heart of Johannesburg collective Batuk, bringing together spirit and earth, the African diaspora past and present. House music and its almighty beat clearly move producers Aero Manyelo and Spoek Mathambo and vocalist Manteiga, though Batuk’s debut album, Música da Terra, pushes past the expected, pulling in pan-African forces like Grupo Zore and Annet Nandujja for a buoyant, banging Afrofuturist vision. The party starts, hot and hard, with the popping “Força Força”, before settling into a sultry simmer via “Call Me Naughty”, then levitating with the syncopated, haunting “Reya Congo”.
