On their self-titled Sparrow debut EP, Luminate kindle a positive Christian rock glow with sleek, sincere tunes and a dynamic sonic attack. The Tyler, Texas-based group lands somewhere between the Fray and Bluetree musically, combining a Brit-rock sense of grandeur with a touch of All-American brashness. Lead vocalist Sam Hancock’s expansive voice displays a distinctive vibrato; on tunes like “My God” and “Fearlessly,” he combines fervor with a sense of awe. Thematically, the songs here move from heartfelt prayers (“Spirit of Love”) to activist anthems (“Shine (Love Is An Action)”) to full-throated worship (“Hear Our Cry’). “Miracle” — co-written with Christian pop/rock notable Jason Ingram —– has the potential to become a praise music favorite. Producer Ed Cash buffs the band’s sound to a fine sheen, showcasing Cody Clark’s ascending guitar leads and Aaron Mathew’s firm drum lines.
