Since debuting in 2019 while still a teenager, Muroki Mbote Wa Githinji has distinguished himself with sharp, bouncy songs that glide freely across genre lines. The Kenyan Aotearoa New Zealand artist continues to flaunt that versatility on his third EP. While opener “Bad Dreams” reminds us just how breezy and affable Muroki sounds against percolating electro-soul, “Tight Rope” ratchets up the funk factor to evoke classic Jamiroquai. “Love Cocoon” pivots again with spacey melodies and an R&B-esque guest turn from alt-pop star BENEE, who has been cosigning for Muroki from the start. “Middle Ground” plays more like an intimate singer-songwriter confessional, and “The Sky in My Head” shows off yet another fresh dimension with cosmic reggae leanings. The closing title track is hushed vocally but more expansive in its production and arrangement, pointing to even wider vistas for his natural smoothness.
