The genius of Monty Python is in the way they closely observe people’s vanities before exaggerating them for effect. Their third film, The Life of Brian, satirizes religion and politics mercilessly. In “The Hermit,” disciples fight over whether Brian’s shoe or water bottle is the true relic—it’s funny because it’s so true to life. Likewise, it’s easy to see ourselves in the larger-than-life characters. It’s all very un-PC, but “Always Look on the Bright Side” closes the soundtrack on a gently whimsical note.
