Hailing from Salt Lake City, The Hollering Pines favor rootsy country-rock sounds and bittersweet lyric scenarios on their debut album, Long Nights, Short Lives and Spilled Chances. The quartet (with former members of The Folka Dots, The Trappers, and The Lower Lights) invite comparisons to such Americana icons as Gillian Welch (whose song “Caleb Meyer” inspired the band’s name), Emmylou Harris, and Lucinda Williams. The close harmonies of sisters Marie Bradshaw and Kiki Jane Buehner are ably supported by drummer/vocalist Dan Buehner and guitarist Dylan Schorer. Especially strong lyrically are the lilting “Not the Only Ones” (a tale of two lovers brought together by their cheating spouses) and the wistful “Oh Mama” (capturing a mother/daughter reunion with a poignant touch). Whether they’re laying down a slow shuffle (“Carla Cain”) or an upbeat twang-rocker (“Cadillac”), The Hollering Pines display an easy chemistry and down-home charm. The album’s original tunes are complemented by an eerie, unconventional version of The Band’s “Long Black Veil” that’s worth the price of admission alone.
