Brothers Krispy and Joey were years ahead of the curve when it came to rap’s increasing disregard for genre boundaries. On their Ktwn EP—named for their adopted Los Angeles ‘hood after Hurricane Katrina displaced them from their NOLA hometown—the duo dive even further into psychedelic rock with a fatalistic bent. On “Ice Cr3@M,” the brothers reference Keith Richards and Basquiat over stadium-sized electric-guitar wails, and “Animal,” with its moody riffs and trippy lyrics, sounds like Outkast time-traveled to play Woodstock ‘69.
