Steel Magnolia

Steel Magnolia

It took CMT’s Can You Duet? to launch Steel Magnolia as a hot country property back in 2009. After several singles and EPs, the duo follows up their initial success with a substantial and altogether satisfying self-titled duet album. Meghan Linsey and Joshua Scott Jones draw upon their off-stage chemistry as a couple to light up these tracks with flirtatious spark and spirit. Their adept vocal interplay makes such tunes as “Ooh La La,” “Eggs Over Easy” and “Last Night Again” sound like banter from a romantic movie. The easy-going shuffle of “Keep On Lovin’ You” and the teasing, lazy lines of “Edge of Goodbye” keep the mood warm and playful. The folk-tinged ballad “Just By Being You (Halo and Wings)” adds a more subdued and tender note, while “Bulletproof” lets Linsey take a tougher, more defiant stance. The most surprising track here is “Glass Houses,” a moody and soulful number that owes more to Steve Earle than the likes of Gloriana or SheDaisy. Linsey and Jones deliver as singers and songwriters on their first full-length project.
