Lazyeye

Lazyeye

Robert Burke Warren is the real deal. A southerner by birth, a citizen of the world by trade, Warren would be a straight country singer or blues singer in another era. However, fully aware of his time and place, Warren does what he can to acclimate to the new century. “All Souls Day” begins things with a rustic charm. “You Look Good In the Rain” pumps up a Stones-swagger with harmonies from Rosanne Cash and husband John Leventhal. “Junkman” kicks up a dobro-led street shuffle that hints at Ry Cooder. “Build Better Wings” evokes the rambling, soulful country-folk of Eric Andersen with Warren’s own personal stamp clearly in evidence. It’s obvious listening that Warren knows his influences and obsessively works at his craft. While his first album, …to this day is haunted with the ghosts from his past and his search for family ties, Lazyeye is the sound of a seasoned performer and songwriter finding new dreams and savoring his good fortune (“God Thinks the World Of Me”) and expanding his territory (the Andy Warhol scene-influenced “Factory Boy”). For the time being, Warren remains an obscure treasure. A great find awaits you.
