Through a clever selection of old and new songs from North and South America, soprano Nadine Sierra expresses a love of connecting people, no matter their backgrounds or beliefs. Sensuous music by Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos sits next to songs by Bernstein, whose musical West Side Story neatly encapsulates Sierra’s dream of a united world. Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress represents an émigré Russian composer accepted into his new American homeland, while Ricky Ian Gordon’s gently gleaming “Stars” is an affectionate homage to the sky above Harlem. Throughout, Sierra’s radiant voice floats exquisitely above a Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in breathtaking form.
