It's the Girls

It's the Girls

On her 14th studio album, Bette Midler returns to her original inspiration: girl groups. Having covered a number of tunes made famous by The Andrews Sisters (including "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" on her 1972 debut), Midler performs the trio's "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" here. Tunes like "Be My Baby" and "Tell Him" are faithfully rendered, while Midler turns The Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" into a western swing number. A version of TLC's 1994 hit "Waterfalls"—the most modern tune in the set—is performed as a contemplative piano ballad. With her career in its fifth decade, Midler sounds like she's having as much fun as ever.
