Irreverence

Irreverence

With Dirtyphonics' first studio album for Dim Mak Records, the Parisian quartet blends electro, drum ‘n' bass, dubstep, and its own heavy bass music with a grimy club energy. The resulting innovative sound is encapsulated in 2013’s Irreverence. It starts with two introduction tracks. “Prelude (White)” opens with a sole piano playing a moody, dramatic piece before “Prelude (Black)” gets things going by exchanging the piano for a deeply layered synthesizer orchestration that plays over dubstep-dappled buildups and deep bass drops. The skittering rhythms and complex arrangements help keep everything sounding one step ahead of Dirtyphonics' peers. This extends into “Stage Divers,” where Dim Mak founder and producer extraordinaire Steve Aoki pulls up his mixing chair and contributes to an electro powerhouse that pulses and punches with a heavy metal attack over a low, rumbling bottom end. The standout single “Dirty” makes good on its title, with gritty club grime shot through a mangle of Daft Punk–style EDM and deep wobbling dubstep that would make the hair on the back of Skrillex’s neck stand up.
