The members of Toto had been successful studio musicians who’d played on records by Michael Jackson, Steely Dan, and countless others. The decision to form their own band was an obvious one and clearly also a good one, since they immediately managed several key hits in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s with “Hold the Line,” “Rosanna,” and “Africa.” Those three songs are highlights at this 35th-anniversary concert in Lodz, Poland, where a packed crowd were treated to a powerful (and naturally impeccable) set by these top-notch musicians. Surviving band members Steve Lukather, Steve Porcaro, David Paich, and Joseph Williams prove why Toto were the gold standard, with performances of “Hydra,” “I’ll Be Over You,” “I Won’t Hold You Back,” “99,” and “Stop Loving You.” Though they were known for their studio perfectionism, they could also inject their live shows with performances that took the songs to exciting new heights. Among the many Toto live albums, this is a strong testimony to their continued professionalism.
