On the original compositions that make up his first bandleader outing for ECM, this trumpeter provides elegiac melodies and subtly roiling rhythms. There are surprises, too, as when the initial rubato cadence of “Dream Like a Child” tips into a swinging strut. Cohen has unwavering control over the mellow tone he favors throughout—even on the high, exposed licks of “Behind the Broken Glass." After his own sterling sideman performance on Mark Turner’s Lathe of Heaven, Cohen attracts an elite cast of probing, responsive players, including bassist Eric Revis and drummer Nasheet Waits.
