Inner Symphonies

Inner Symphonies

In their first album of original music, pianist/composer Hania Rani and cellist Dobrawa Czocher have created adventures in mesmerizing soundscapes. Each beautifully crafted piece has its own distinct character and textures, beginning with the gentle “Ouverture,” in which Czocher’s cello—surrounded by swelling digital effects—calls out from the sonic gloom. “There Will Be Hope” combines symphonic sweep with rhythmic drive, its final bars melting into a major key to bring a sense of solace and comfort. Jazz improvisation lies at the heart of “Demons,” a hypnotic, eight-minute journey that daringly revolves around a single piano motif, while you can hear the influence of Radiohead in “Malasana,” a meditative piece that’s full of Eastern flavor. With the shimmering “Spring,” Inner Symphonies ends on a note of hope and optimism.
