In the Moment

In the Moment

Pieces of a Dream continue to fight the good fight they started as Philadelphia teenagers more than 22 years ago. Led by charter members James Lloyd (keyboards, co-producer, etc.) and Curtis Harmon (drums, co-producer, etc.) and joined by familiar faces from recent years, the group makes a seductive sound blending modern jazz and R&B. This combination shines on “For Real” and the title track, which is anchored by the subwoofer-friendly grooves of bassist David Dyson. The beats throughout are mostly programmed (or sound like it), and the musical backdrop is populated with digital keyboards. Yet there are notable moments of heat in the stinging guitar work of Rohn Lawrence on “TTYL (I’m Driving)” and “Never Let It End.” The melodic saxophone of Tony Watson Jr. pushes things along on “People Say” and “Coming Home.” Stacking up well against any of Pieces of a Dream’s past efforts or other recent works in the smooth jazz realm, In the Moment shows that this band hasn’t lost a step.
