A band like ARTEMIS, so overflowing with talent, is bound to have turnover as calendars diverge and careers evolve. In Real Time, the group’s second outing, reflects this: Nicole Grover inherits the tenor saxophone chair from Melissa Aldana, and the versatile Alexa Tarantino takes over for Anat Cohen, playing alto/soprano saxes and flute. Veteran pianist Renee Rosnes serves as producer and seasoned guiding force, even if ARTEMIS is properly a collective. The band members each arranged their own tunes. Rosnes’ “Balance of Time” and “Empress Afternoon” complement trumpeter Ingrid Jensen’s hip, Rhodes-inflected “Timber” as well as swinging pieces by Tarantino (“Whirlwind”), bassist Noriko Ueda (“Lights Away From Home”), and drummer Allison Miller (“Bow and Arrow). The three-horn texture and harmony at times recalls the ensemble sound of Wayne Shorter’s The Soothsayer. It’s fitting, then, to end with a Shorter piece from that era if not that album: the radiant ballad “Penelope,” arranged by Rosnes. And to open, for that matter, with Rosnes’ treatment of the gripping, devilishly complex “Slink” (from Lyle Mays’ classic 1986 eponymous debut), honoring another eminent jazz composer who is sorely missed.
