In Public

In Public

Prog rockers Flash only lasted for a few years, but they put out three stunning albums in that time. This posthumous release of a 1973 concert recording reveals that this band—led by founding Yes guitarist Peter Banks—were even more impressive onstage than they were in the studio. While many '70s prog bands included keyboardists, Flash were strictly a singer/guitarist/bassist/drummer setup. They managed an impressively expansive sound on their studio recordings, but hearing them lay it down live, without the benefit of overdubbing, shows the true extent of the band's musicianship. Banks' guitar gifts had already been obvious, but drummer Mike Hough really shines here, alternating between big, bold splashes of sound in support of Banks and subtle, intricate polyrhythms. The band tackle tunes from their first two albums, lending the mostly long, complex pieces an extra layer of fervid intensity. Banks later said Flash's best moments were onstage, and after absorbing In Public, it's easy to see why.
