The Bearer of Bad News

The Bearer of Bad News

Andy Shauf’s second album was recorded in his basement in Regina, Saskatchewan, over two years' time. It’s low-key and literary, with a cozy but lonesome feel reminiscent of obscure works such as Dan Matz’s Carry Me Over or Pale Horse & Rider’s These Are the New Good Times. For a higher-profile comparison, think Damien Jurado and his penchant for bad men. Songs such as “I’m Not Falling Asleep,” “Covered in Dust,” and “Wendell Walker” center on basic arrangements of acoustic guitar and/or piano, with cello poking through to warm up brutal tales of adultery and death. It’s a beautiful piece of work.
