Timeline

The Copenhagen duo Darkness Falls specializes in creating beautifully haunting music with only a guitar, bass, keyboard, and Josephine Philip’s ghostly vocals at their disposal. The title track to their 2012 extended remix single Timeline plays with an old-school Portishead cool. Over heavily reverberated electric guitar leads, a low distorted bass rumbles while Philip inflects a bit like The Raveonettes’ Sharin Foo. The following “Com Truise Remix” adds vintage analog soundscapes reminiscent of the synthesizers in Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” and Barry De Vorzon’s 1979 soundtrack to The Warriors. It's easily the grooviest remix; Pional implants bouncy neon bass grooves that sound harvested from an early-'80s R&B tune. Tom Demac injects fluttering two-step trappings and percolating percussion that make his version of “Timeline” fizz like a well-shaken bottle of soda. Fans of deep low-end wobble, echo-deck delays, and random blasts from the melodica are sure to dig the standout remix by Anders Trentemøller, who also produced the duo’s debut album.
