Urbex

Urbex

This ambitious album from the young Belgian drummer has traces of Pat Metheny’s gentle, reverb-heavy approach to experimentalism—check out the guitars in “Les douze marionnettes”—but plenty of original touches, too. The uptempo “Metropolitan Adventure” has a relentless groove and some tasty brass touches; later on the album, Pierre revisits the theme in order to pursue a rhythmic rethink. And in a display of conceptual bravery and instrumental prowess, he puts nearly all his global influences—Haitian, Senegalese, American—together in a single drum part on “Who Planted This Tree?”
