Hyperreal, Finnish pianist Aki Rissanen’s sixth outing for the Edition label, is a departure from the sound of his flagship trio with bassist Antti Lötjönen and drummer Teppo Mäkynen. The absence of bass lets the music float a bit freer. Rissanen works with an expansive and unpredictable palette of acoustic piano and electronic keyboards, while trumpeter Verneri Pohjola brings melodic flair and legato resonance, complementing the stark and engaging beats of drummer Robert Ikiz. Together, this trio casts what is almost an aural illusion of a larger group. The result is an enticing genre hybrid, equal parts ambient sound-sculpting and bracing jazz improvisation. “Influxus” is a strong highlight, full of rhythmic charge, harmonic mystery, and sonic dirt.
