The Sydney duo of Catherine Stratton and Calmell Teagle bring a modern pop edge—and equally modern anxiety—to their propulsive updating of alt-rock. Whether describing feeling fragile to the touch or the intimidating crush of overstimulation, the seven songs on this mini-album transmute everyday vulnerability into heaving, hook-driven choruses. Produced by Taka Perry (Ruel, Sycco), opener “Feel Alive” muses on the challenge of getting our lives right while we’re still here. “Still Mine” then builds musical drama with dual vocals and pounding drums before culminating in an anthemic appeal for the subject to stay. After touring with Dua Lipa and Mallrat off the back of their 2021 debut EP Life of Mine, Cat & Calmell display renewed confidence here. They may still be documenting the nagging emotional tumult of their early twenties, but the pair’s songwriting rings true far beyond that one timeframe alone.
