House of Mysteries

House of Mysteries

Skyline Pigeons, named after an Elton John song, are a California-based duo of sisters Roxanne and Caroline Teti. Their debut album, House of Mysteries, traces the painful and eventually liberating experience of a Santa Barbara wildfire that took their home and all its possessions. Recorded in Seattle with producer Ryan Hadlock (Blonde Redhead, Ra Ra Riot), the album explores a variety of tones with the help of additional musicians. The result nails down the duo's elusive sound. Wurlitzer keyboards, vintage analog synths, and guitars that drift in and out of the mix bring the sisters' harmonies into focus. "The Cycle" and "Get Up" establish a tight, professional sound that's very different from the second half of the album, where the Teti sisters explore the looser end of the spectrum to seductive results. "Lucid" allows for a dreamlike reverie. "Alright" dips the vocals in reverb for an impressionistic pop tune. "Unrequited" could be Mazzy Star with a backbone.
