Hit Me When U Leave The Klub: The Playlist

Hits like Tyga’s “Rack City” and YG’s “My N***a,” with springy DJ Mustard beats and earworm hooks, brought Compton club music to the mainstream airwaves in the early 2010s. Young Money’s West Coast ambassador remained a singles chart fixture throughout the decade, while the 4Hunnid label boss made gangsta rap concept albums that played out like LA-based noir films. The two were set to tour together in 2023, but instead they dropped a joint album, Hit Me When U Leave the Klub: The Playlist, full of songs meant to be blasted from brand-new convertibles (in particular, “West Coast Weekend,” a G-funk throwback with an R&B hook from Blxst). It’s also loaded with slick references to rap classics from their formative years: “Rubber Band Man” has Tyga shouting out Nelly’s “Tip Drill” and YG borrowing a flow from Juvenile, while “Get Me Litt” repurposes the famous bed-squeak sample from Trillville’s “Some Cut.” Come for the low-stakes party rap, stay for Lil Wayne drawling, “Got a bunch of zeros like a bag of new Funions.”
