Christian rapper Derek Minor packs plenty of imagination into this eight-track EP, starting with “Heaven’s Light.” It opens as spare, space-age funk before doubling over on itself with knotty guitar lines and smooth jazz overtones. A spoken-word interjection from his mother reminds him, no matter what else happens, to always esteem Christ above all else. The remainder of the album is similarly dense with ideas, hitting on R&B, trap beats, pop hooks, and sprawling psychedelia; the lyrics, meanwhile, don’t pull any punches, continually circling back to the exaltation of the Lord. Lots to unpack in just 25 minutes.
