Head & Heart

Head & Heart

When a talented singer like Luka Bloom decides to make a record for fun, it can’t help but be an enjoyable experience for all involved. Several songs here were recorded at Bloom’s home; others were recorded at his colleague Brian Masterson’s house, with the remaining half of the album cut in Wicklow over two days with The Phil Ware Trio. Bloom contributes just two originals: “Liffeyside” (his tribute to the town of Newbridge, where he grew up) and “Give You Wings” (his lament for the Belgian children who lost their lives in a 2012 bus crash in Switzerland, and the families that live with the anguish). The remaining songs were favorites. Traditionals like “My Wild Irish Rose” and “Danny Boy” sound refreshed. Bob Dylan’s “Every Grain of Sand,” Ewan MacColl’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” and John Hartford’s “Gentle on My Mind” are given unique takes that illustrate Bloom’s love for the material and his remarkable interpretive skills.
