Got 2 Be Groovin'

On his ninth album, Euge Groove continues to find the fertile middle ground between jazz, R&B, funk, and soul with an expressive playing style. Featuring nine originals and a cover, this album is at its absolute best when he digs into the funk for tunes like the surging original title track, with its big hook. Guitarist Paul Brown also stops by for the insistent midtempo song “Homie Grown,” adding some tasty textures and a slippery acoustic solo. While best known for his tenor saxophone playing, Groove sounds right at home on soprano for the delicate “Forever and a Day” and “Miss Bane” (which was inspired by his wife). Another standout, “Rain Down on Me,” opens as an acoustic piano ballad before shifting to a sensuous gospel-like melody that's slow and deliberately unpacked, thus refuting the idea that this music is more popcraft than art. The sparkling cover of “Wild Flowers” rounds things out nicely with a fine vocal performance by American Idol’s Elliott Yamin.
