Bassist Gerald Cannon records infrequently as a leader, which makes the invigorating Combinations something of an event. The set features standards, originals, and deep cuts including two nods to Cannon’s bass forebear Sam Jones (“Every Man Is a King” and “One for Amos,” both from Jones’ late-’70s output). Strong performances from trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, altoists Gary Bartz and Sherman Irby, and pianist Kenny Barron (as well as cameos from guitarist Russell Malone and Living Colour drummer, Will Calhoun) make Combinations a rewarding listen.
