Jack Gray relays the familiar speed bumps of relationships with fresh, breezy insights on this sharply drawn EP, which follows his 2019 album Nights Like This. The Queensland pop artist conveys the swooning giddiness of new love (and lust) on the jaunty, piano-led opener “Practically Strangers” and the Harry Styles-esque “Chasing Stability,” but his usually smooth vocals begin to frazzle as his romantic anxieties mount on the closing ballad “One Step Back.” These self-contained portraits benefit from bubbly melodies and crisp arrangements, with delicate shades of R&B enhancing the hopeful pining of “I Think She Wants Me.” Especially light on its feet is the propulsive “You Can Run,” which highlights how easy it is to surrender to self-doubt when you’re not sure where you stand.
