In 1978, The Eagles released this single of seasonal cheer. It was their first release with new bassist Timothy B. Schmit, who'd continue with the band on The Long Run. "Please Come Home for Christmas" had been written by bluesman Charles Brown, who'd released his version in 1960; his single was often heard around the holidays. The Eagles' version reached No. 18 in the U.S. and was reissued as a CD single in 1990. "Funky New Year," the b-side written by the band's Glenn Frey and Don Henley, became a coveted rarity and an important piece of their Millennium Concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, in which they rang in the year 2000 with a spirited version of the song.
