Foreverland

Trumpeter Keyon Harrold debuted in 2009 on the Dutch indie label Criss Cross, playing acoustic jazz stylistically in the orbit of noted mentors such as Charles Tolliver. But Harrold also rose in stature among hip-hop and R&B artists, gathering major side-player experience with Common, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Maxwell, and others. He performed Don Cheadle’s trumpet parts in the 2015 Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead. His 2017 major-label debut, The Mugician, blended modern jazz, hip-hop, and neo-soul in alluring ways, foregrounding a lyrical, agile, and inventive trumpet voice. That spirit carries over to his Concord debut, Foreverland, and its gorgeous title track featuring the hypnotic vocals of Laura Mvula. The deep electric bass of Burniss Travis and the complex, funky drumming of Chris Dave elevate the set. The emphasis is mood and atmosphere, though Harrold stretches out on the more turbulent tracks, including “The Intellectual” and “Gotta Go.”
